Crib Safety Poster and Brochure
Crib Safety Poster and Brochure

When these pieces were printed years ago, there were a high number of infant deaths in aboriginal communities in northern Saskatchewan attributed to the use of unsafe cribs. Posters were hung in key locations to promote the awareness of crib safety and direct parents to the brochure. The goal of the brochure was to use very simple illustrations detailing specific areas of a crib that could be dangerous to their children. The harmful parts of the crib were printed in solid black for easy identification. I recall there was extensive design research, including a consult with a Cree elder. The elder also shared with us a traditional story about protecting children that I included in the brochure. It’s laid out over a stretched animal skin graphic on one of the panels. Even though the content may be dated, I think the design and illustration style aged well.
